At Silk City Fit, we love to celebrate our members’ successes. Joe P. is one of our loyal 5:30am members. He’s also a dad, a husband, and a Supply Chain Director. Although he had a background playing football through high school and college, he took a break from fitness for a while and focused on other priorities, like family and work.
Joe joined Silk City Fit last February. He realized that working out at home in the garage just wasn’t the same as being a part of a community of like-minded people who are there to push you every day. After getting his gym routine down and building up his weightlifting, gymnastics, and conditioning, Joe wanted to take it to the next level with nutrition. Focusing on the fuel you give your body is the foundation of CrossFit’s pyramid of fitness.
Joe reached out to the Silk City Fit Nutrition program and began working with Coach Britt. They started with an initial assessment of Joe’s situation and talked about his personal goals. They used the InBody machine to measure his weight, body fat, muscle mass, and basal metabolic rate (BMR). They also had discussions about his current eating habits, his food environment, and other lifestyle factors that affect nutrition like work, stress, and family activities.
With this information, they put together a plan, and Joe got right to work. SCF Nutrition clients have weekly check-ins with their coach and have access to an InBody scan every 4 weeks to monitor progress.
Joe was committed to the process and gradually changed his behaviors. They started by focusing on a few key food groups:
“I thought that I was eating the right combination of foods but I quickly found out I wasn’t. I wasn’t even close to where I needed to be, specifically with protein and vegetables.”
In order to achieve his body composition goals, they determined that Joe should start tracking his food intake to ensure he was hitting the recommended macronutrient targets. By introducing specific, manageable behaviors each week, and making adjustments based on Joe’s feedback, they were able to focus on consuming high quality foods and properly fueling for workouts.
“Once we put a plan together, I ended up eating more food but the quality was better than before.”
By investing time and effort into his nutrition, Joe has transformed not only physically, but mentally too. His body fat percentage is down from 23.1% to 19.7%. He’s lost 9 pounds of body fat and maintained his muscle mass. The way he thinks about food is different. He now has the skills to maintain a healthy diet for the rest of his life, while still enjoying meals with family and friends. We are so proud of all that Joe has accomplished and we look forward to seeing what the next year brings for him!
